Greenvale Farm
Gweru, Zimbabwe
Greenvale Farm, a working, productive farm, is an
example of an agricultural self-help project. This
project has a three-fold purpose: (1) to employ local
farmers and help them learn appropriate and sound
farming methods; (2) to provide crops to the Brothers, their
needy students at Loreto and Rutenga, and to whoever may
be in need that the Brothers see fit to assist; and (3) to
provide a source of income to the Brothers through the sale of certain
of the crops grown at the farm. Maintaining buildings
and equipment, protecting sources of irrigation, and
planting and harvesting the crops properly require good
stewardship. The ultimate goal is self-sufficiency! It is a vital aspect for future success.
Loreto High School
Loreto, North Gweru, Zimbabwe
The return of the
Brothers of the Sacred Heart to Zimbabwe in the early
1980s was a miraculous occurrence of rebirth and new
life. Loreto Secondary School was the center of that
rebirth for many years. A highly respected coeducational
high school, Loreto Secondary School shines among the
schools of Zimbabwe. Academic excellence, athletic
success, and spiritual growth and development among the
students continue to help this school to grow and
improve. All this while the school continues to reach
out to the poor, especially those whose families have
been ravaged by drought, famine, and illness and the
perils of a fright fully poor economy and political
instability.
Rutenga High School
Rutenga, Masvingo, Zimbabwe
The Brothers of the
Sacred Heart established in 2000 the Rutenga Catholic
Mission School, located in the southern part of the
African county of Zimbabwe near the south African border. This new school is located
in an area where the vast majority of the people are
very poor, and because of persistent drought, hunger
prevails. This school as originally planned, would have
classrooms for well over 1000 day scholars and boarders,
Geography and Computer labs, a Home Economics and
Fashion and Fabric block, a metal and woodworking block,
an Agricultural block, 4 hostels for boarders, adequate
housing for lay teachers and for the Brothers, a chapel,
dining and administration block. Essential to the
success of this project is water to provide safe and
sufficient water for sustance and farming.
Although a new
administration block is nearing completion many other
aspects of this educational project remain unfulfilled.
The building of a dorm is a pressing need. Many
qualified young people are presently unable to attend
the school because they live at great distances from the
campus. Enrollment is currently at 223, a drop from
previous years. A number of students have dropped out. Eighty percent of Zimbabweans
are currently unemployed and the national inflation rate
is the highest in the world. A lack of family and
financial resources complicates this devastating national
economy.
